Getting Around Grindelwald
Grindelwald is easy to explore without a car, but it helps to understand the difference between its two main railway stops. Grindelwald Terminal is the modern transport hub for the Eiger Express and Männlichen, while Grindelwald Bahnhof is in the village centre, close to restaurants, shops and the Firstbahn side of Grindelwald.
The two stations are around a 20-minute walk apart, or approximately five minutes by train. Local buses, taxis and well-maintained walking routes provide additional ways to move around the village.
Grindelwald Terminal is only around a 4-minute walk away. Grindelwald Bahnhof and the village centre are approximately 17–18 minutes away on foot, so you can comfortably use both sides of Grindelwald without relying on a car.
Two Stations, Two Different Locations
Grindelwald Terminal
This is the best stop for the Eiger Express, the gondola to Männlichen, ski rental, lockers and the Terminal shopping area. Trains arriving from Interlaken Ost stop here before continuing to central Grindelwald.
Use Grindelwald Terminal when travelling to Eigergletscher, Jungfraujoch via the Eiger Express, Männlichen or Chalet Amaryllis.
Grindelwald Bahnhof
The main village station is located close to the centre of Grindelwald, Dorfstrasse, restaurants, cafés and shops. It is also the more convenient arrival point for the Firstbahn side of the village and for trains towards Kleine Scheidegg.
Use Grindelwald Bahnhof when your destination is the village centre, Firstbahn or central Grindelwald.
Moving between the stations
The walk takes around 20 minutes. The short train ride takes approximately five minutes and is particularly useful with luggage, ski equipment or tired children. Always check the timetable, as frequency changes during the day and by season.
Travelling by Train
Arrival and departure
Regional trains connect Interlaken Ost with Grindelwald Terminal and Grindelwald Bahnhof. If you are staying at Chalet Amaryllis, leave the train at Grindelwald Terminal.
Terminal to Bahnhof
The same railway line links the Terminal with the village station. This makes the train a convenient alternative to walking between the mountain lifts and the centre.
Check before leaving
Connections are reliable, but the final services and seasonal frequency can change. Check your exact journey shortly before travelling.
Local Buses in Grindelwald
Local buses connect Grindelwald Bahnhof, the Terminal area, Firstbahn, Pfingsteggbahn and many residential and mountain areas. They are useful when carrying equipment or travelling to places that are not directly beside the railway.
| Best for | Useful stop or area | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Village centre | Grindelwald Bahnhof | The main interchange for local bus routes. |
| Chalet Amaryllis | Grindelwald, Rothenegg | The nearest useful local bus stop for the chalet area. |
| Eiger Express and Männlichen | Grindelwald Terminal | Continue directly to the mountain lifts and Terminal facilities. |
| Firstbahn and Pfingstegg | Village / Firstbahn / Pfingsteggbahn | Routes and frequency vary by season. |
Some local bus journeys may be included with the Grindelwald Guest Card. Coverage and seasonal conditions can change, so check the current guest-card information and timetable.
Taxis
Taxis are available in Grindelwald, but the number of vehicles is limited compared with a city. During busy ski weeks, weekends and late evenings, it is sensible to book in advance rather than expect a car to be waiting at the station.

Getting Around at Night
Grindelwald does not have an all-night public transport network. Bus services become much less frequent in the evening and many local routes finish earlier than the trains. The train between Grindelwald Bahnhof and Grindelwald Terminal can therefore be the most useful evening connection while it is still operating.
For a late dinner, event, very late arrival or early departure, check the final connection in advance. If it is too late for public transport, pre-book a taxi. Do not assume that a taxi will be immediately available after the last train.
Walking Around Grindelwald
Much of central Grindelwald can be explored on foot, but the village is built along a mountain slope. Distances that look short on a map may include steep uphill sections. In winter, allow extra time when roads and pavements are snowy or icy.
Chalet Amaryllis is reached by an asphalt road and sits between the Terminal and the village centre. This avoids the long, steep climb required for many properties located high above Grindelwald.
